Dramatic decrease in blood pressure in Stage 2 hypertensive female client with behaviour, diet and lifestyle modifications. Before starting her Nutritional Therapy programme, the client was on a GP-prescribed hypertensive medication as a result of her long history of elevated blood pressure.
Upon evaluation it was noticed that despite regularly taking her blood pressure medication, her numbers were rather elevated (170/63) which her GP aware of. Upon analysising her dietary intake it was strongly suspected her medication was being rendered ineffective due to a major dietary interaction which the client was habitually taking concomitantly with her Losartan which was identified and rectified – nb: GP would be informed of this.
Within a few weeks her blood pressure dropped dramatically to a maximum low of 124/63 – see chart. Despite the client loosing 5 kilos in the process, admittedly, it is strongly suspected the significant blood pressure reductions were largely down to proper administration of the medication by removing the dietary insult, rather than the dietary and lifestyle intervention per se, and an example how Nutritional Therapy can help improve client compliance and efficacy of their prescribed medications by understanding and identifying potential interactions with dietary components which could potentially decrease the effiacy of a medication and inadvertently place a patient at a risk of an adverse event.
